Con Dao
/kõn dao/

Also known as the Devil’s island, this is an archipelago off the southeast coast of Vietnam. This is also where the French ruled Indochina held up political prisoners back in the days. Fast forward to today, the Vietnamese government subsidises visits to Con Dao by soldiers who were imprisoned there as a token of thanks for their previous sacrifice.

The untouched Con Dao islands are off the southeast coast of Vietnam. The largest island in a chain of 15 islands and islets is Con Son, where we stayed at. The place has it all: beautiful sun-kissed white beaches, coral reefs, emerald bays and lush forests.

Perhaps Con Dao is beautifully preserved until this day because it used to be the Devil’s Island of Indochina. Though well known to the soldiers, Con Dao is still very much a hidden gem for the rest of us. It wasn’t until recently that Six Senses opened as the first five-star resort on the island.

The location is remote but easy to access, only a quick 1-hour hop away from Ho Chi Minh City by plane.

The set up is sophisticated but low key. Nothing over the top, which I love. You are left to beautifully kept nature. The villas are all earth colours, blending in with the surroundings, you get bikes to go around the resort, and the private beach is right in front of your eyes. The atmosphere is relaxed and private. A great getaway.

The service was impeccable. Friendly, again, not over the top. Great attention to detail. You know they’ve thought it all through when you come back to the villa to find aloe vera gel waiting for you after a sun burnt day out by the beach.

The food was also amazing. We had breakfast included – and best perk is you can have in-villa dining as an option! We did this the whole trip we were there. The selection is amazing. For other meals, if you love fresh Vietnamese food with lots of flavours, you will love the food here. Of course, it is quite expensive given you would pay probably half of the price outside of the resort. But you get the convenience, service, and any dietary adjustments necessary.

The activities are also abundant if you want to dive (and night dive!), snorkel, take a boat out to sea to catch the turtle nesting and hatching (May to October). We only snorkeled. The corals were not very healthy and the water was not very clear – but apparently, the water is clearer from February to July. Nonetheless, it was good to get out and see some fish, take the speedboat for a ride and just enjoy ourselves on the ocean for a bit.

Our stay was way too short – only 2 days for a weekend getaway. But it is also amazing that we get to do short weekend trips to such beautiful places.

This experience definitely has a place in my heart. When we go on beach resorts, it really is the resort that makes the difference. And this time at Six Senses, we were impressed. We definitely need to come back again. (By the way – this is not sponsored or an ad of some sort, just our personal opinions!)

Any other eco-luxe resorts you’ve enjoyed? I know Six Senses does a few more of these but would love to try other resorts too. Let me know in the comments below!

Top tip:  Give the ocean view duplex pool villa a try – we liked this better than the ocean front duplex villa because:

  1. Ocean view means more privacy since you are on the upper level, away from the eyes of those strolling on the beach
  2. Arguably the view is better higher up – the villa is 2 stories, so from the balcony of the bed room on the second floor, the panoramic view is breathtaking
  3. It is cheaper too!

Access to the ocean is only 10 seconds as opposed to 2 seconds for the ocean front villas, so given all the positives listed above, this difference is quite marginal.
